I frequently get asked how many people a cake will serve… And my answer is always the same… ‘It depends on how you slice the cake.’
For my family, I cut BIG slices! Haha. For others trying to feed many people at a birthday party or wedding, smaller slices make more sense.
Let’s talk type of cake and type of knife…
- To slice a layer cake, use a long and thin knife, cut with a gentle sawing motion.
- To slice a fluffy cake (i.e. angel food cake), use a serrated knife and saw very gently to cut through the cake.
- To slice a cheesecake, rinse the knife in very hot water before slicing and dry on a paper towel. This helps prevent the knife from sticking or tearing the cheesecake.
Below are some visuals to show how you could slice a 6″ round, 9″ round, and 9×13 sheet cake (those are the sizes I offer):

I hope this helps!! 🙂
